South Central Promotes Better Speech and Hearing Month

One of the most anticipated moments for a parent is the sound of a child’s first words. Yet, 14 million children in America have a speech and/or language problem. For some, those words can be delayed or difficult to understand. Anything that impairs a child’s ability to communicate, limits their life. Communication disorders come in many forms like stuttering, difficulty pronouncing words, delayed speech or language, difficulty comprehending words, difficulty expressing thoughts or extreme hoarseness. These problems can affect anyone, at any age, and isolate us from other people.

During the month of May, South Central Regional Medical Center recognizes Better Speech and Hearing Month. The Speech-Language Pathology department at South Central offers services for all types of speech, language and swallowing problems. If you know of someone who experiences communication problems, help is available through the South Central Speech-Language Pathology department. Physician referral is required.

South Central is excited for their recent partnership with Sertoma of Laurel. The partnership provides scholarship funds to those children with speech and/or language problems, who qualify. Through Sertoma’s dedication to children with speech and language impairments, access to needed services can help transform a child’s ability to reach their full potential. Giving back to the community through service and commitment, Sertoma provides the best gift of all, the ability to communicate. For more information about the scholarship fund provided by Sertoma of Laurel, please contact South Central’s Speech-Language Pathology department at 601-399-0539

The next time you say “Thank you” or “I love you”, remember, not everyone can.
