SCRMC Announces August 2010 Blood Drive Prize Winners

Congratulations to everyone who helped make SCRMC's August Blood Drive a great success!

South Central would like to extend a big THANK YOU to all of their staff and to the members of our community who so graciously came out on August 11th-13th, and donated blood to the United Blood Services during our August Blood Drive.  All donors received a FREE tote bag, a FREE hamburger meal or hot dog meal provided by Mississippi Beef Council, a FREE cholesterol screening, and a chance at many other wonderful door prizes during each day of our blood drive!

SCRMC hosted multiple blood drives at the Laurel Family Clinic, Wellness Center, and at the medical center.  After combining all of the generous donations, SCRMC is proud to announce that we received 366 units of red blood cells, 10 units of platelets, and 1 unit of plasma; thereby, exceeding each of our goals in all areas!  CONGRATULATIONS to everyone involved.

ANNOUNCEMENT:  Please be sure to mark your calendar for SCRMC's December Blood Drive on Friday, December 17, 2010 from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.  We would love to see everyone's smiling face and giving heart again!

TOP TEN REASONS TO DONATE BLOOD*:

1. Someone needs blood every 2-3 seconds.  An average of 38,000 - 40,000 units is needed every day in the U.S.  By the time that they reach 75 years of age, about 80% of individuals will have needed blood at some point, yet less than 5% of individuals choose to donate.

2. Blood donors are true heroes.  Their blood donation will be broken down into three components, enabling their one donation to save up to three lives of people with cancer, leukemia, anemia, or undergoing surgery for an illness or an injury.

3. Your blood donation is equal to one pint.  A pint is a little more than one unit.  A bleeding trauma victim can run through 100 units of blood in no time.  Blood is needed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.

4. Donors undergo a FREE mini-physical that includes checking your blood pressure, pulse, temperature, iron-levels, and cholesterol.

5. You will also receive a blood donor’s card and profile, which will tell you what your blood-type is for FREE.  With United Blood Services your donations can add up reward points which will earn you FREE movie tickets, ice cream, gift certificates, etc.  Also, donating blood at some blood drives can gain you access to chances at even more prizes such as t-shirts, tote bags, can-koozies, etc.

6. A pint is equal to 16 ounces.  16 ounces is equal to one pound.  Your blood donation of one pint is the quickest way to lose one pound!  Also, the human body typically has around 10-12 pints of blood total, and it will replenish the blood you donated in less than 48 hours.

7. Donating blood can lessen your chances at developing hemochromatosis, or iron-overload, which can lead to heart disease and many other major health problems.  Research shows that donating blood at least 3 times a year can lessen your chances of iron-overload and having a heart attack by 50%!

8. Giving blood is fast and easy process where you receive prizes and refreshments both before and after the donation.  The entire life-saving process takes approximately 45-60 minutes.  The actual donation time is only about 10-15 minutes of the process.  Research shows that most donors describe feeling a slight initial pinch from the needle when it first goes in; however, they experience little to no discomfort throughout the donation.  Therefore, within only 15 minutes, donors are typically enjoying their juice and cookies while proudly wearing their blood-donation badge of honor gauze and sticker and picking out their prizes.

9. Donating blood is a safe process.  Each donor’s blood is collected though a new, sterile needle that is used once and then discarded.  Although most people feel fine after donating blood, a small number of people may feel lightheaded or dizzy, have an upset stomach, or experience a bruise or pain where the needle was inserted.

10. If all eligible donors would donate regularly, 3-6 times a year, all blood needs would be met and devastating blood shortages would be a thing of the past.  Blood is perishable.  There is no substitute for blood.  Please become a regular blood donor; you never know when you or someone you love may need it.
