Your baby swing is a garage sale steal; the play yard is the one you stowed three years ago. Used baby equipment can seem like a smart alternative to pricey new products. But, safety standards change quickly, and you can’t tell by looking whether a product is defective. To be safe, parents can check the CPSC website, www.cpsc.gov, or call the agency’s hotline, 1-800-638-2772, to check on recall status. If a product has been recalled, the manufacturer will usually send a retrofitting kit to repair the defect or replace the product at no charge.
