Eating less fat now may help preserve your vision later. After age 50, clear central vision may gradually deteriorate. Called macular degeneration, the condition is a major cause of blindness. Researchers studied the diets of more than 100,000 men and women age 50 or older. Those who ate high amounts of linoleic acid—a fat found in beef, pork, and lamb—had a 35% higher risk of developing this vision loss.

  • Add maple extract to glazed vegetables.
  • Top potatoes or vegetables with butter-flavored or cheese-flavored seasoning.
  • Use bouillon cubes to enrich sauces and soups.
