HRT: Is It Right for You?

A recent study measured the effects of hormone replacement therapy on a woman’s bones and cardiovascular system, as well as determined her risk of breast cancer. Researchers found a slight increase in the risk of breast cancer, cardiovascular disease, and stroke. “These are ongoing studies,” Dr. Daniels says. “For women taking hormone replacement therapy, risk of these health problems is increased less than 1%.”

Dr. Daniels points out that women benefit from hormone replacement therapy. According to the study, hormone replacement therapy improves the quality of life of women by reducing symptoms caused by the lack of estrogen. These symptoms include hot flashes, vaginal dryness, insomnia, and night sweats.

Dr. Daniels recommends that a woman should talk to her physician about individual risk factors and her particular needs before deciding to discontinue use of hormone replacement therapy.

“There are a variety of different modalities and treatments available today to help women who suffer from the symptoms of menopause. Help is available—women do not have to suffer.”
