Who’s at Risk for Falling Asleep at the Wheel?

  • All drivers who are sleep deprived, drive long distances without rest breaks, drive through the night, take medication that makes them drowsy, drink alcohol, drive alone, and travel frequently
  • Young people—55% of sleep-caused crashes involve drivers who are younger than age 25
  • Shift workers—nonconventional work schedules contribute to fatigue
  • Commercial drivers—especially those who drive long miles and at odd hours
  • People with undiagnosed sleep disorders—almost 40 million Americans suffer from sleep disorders; the majority are undiagnosed
