Take Care of Your Achilles Tendons

Overuse injuries send many exercisers—from seasoned runners to weekend warriors—back to the couch. One of the most common culprits? Injury to the Achilles tendon—the tendon connecting the calf muscles to the heel bone. Avoid the pain, tenderness, stiffness, and swelling of this injury by practicing these prevention tips:
  • Before running, warm up by stretching and walking for a few minutes.
  • Avoid strenuous sprinting and hill running—especially if you are not used to it.
  • Alternate hard and easy workouts. If you run one day, walk the next.
  • Choose athletic shoes that give your feet enough support and cushion.
