Family Medicine—A Unique Medical Specialty
The family physician is a doctor who is educated and trained in family medicine—an all-encompassing medical specialty. Family doctors possess unique attitudes, skills, and knowledge that qualify them to provide continuing and comprehensive medical care, health maintenance, and preventive services to each member of the family, regardless of their sex, age, or type of problem, be it biological, behavioral, or social. These specialists, because of their background and interactions with the family, are best qualified to serve as the patient’s advocate in all health-related matters, including the appropriate use of consultants, health services, and community resources.

Dr. Rambod Rouhbakhsh, Laurel’s newest family physician, joined Laurel Family Clinic in August 2004. When asked why he chose medicine as a career, he said, “I always thought about it as a child. When I had an asthma attack, the doctors were heroic—they rescued me. I saw the gratitude in my parents’ eyes. When you study medicine, you are getting closer to God. You are studying something that is more spiritually fulfilling.” When asked why he and his wife Darcy decided to move from Portland, Oregon to Laurel after he completed his residency program, he was quick to say, “The people. They are so polite, and it’s such a joy. No matter how difficult their medical problems, the people here are unbelievably kind and gracious.”
Dr. Rouhbakhsh says that he looks up to the physicians he works with at Laurel Family Clinic. “They have such devoted patients. They are my role models.” He says that the collegial atmosphere among the physicians here is unique and they all work hand in hand. “The staff is great. They are respectful, helpful, and well-trained. Medicine is medicine no matter where you are, but Laurel is blessed with a great group of physicians.”
