Celebrate National Volunteer Week
April 17 to 23
National Volunteer Week is the official time to recognize and celebrate the efforts of volunteers at the local, state, and national levels. The week was first celebrated in 1972 and was sponsored by the National Volunteer Center. In 1974, President Richard Nixon signed an executive order establishing the annual celebration. Every President since then has signed a proclamation promoting the week. It is now sponsored by the Points of Light Foundation & Volunteer Center National Network, a nonprofit organization founded in 1990.
Volunteering is a key aspect of civic responsibility. Volunteers want to improve the quality of life in their community. By giving something back, they feel they can have a direct and personal impact on their world.
We live in a society that has always depended on volunteers of different kinds—some who give money, others who give time, and a great many who freely give of their special skills, full- or part-time. Almost anything that embodies our deepest commitment to the living and caring depends on some form of volunteerism.
The employees at South Central Regional Medical Center, ComfortCare Home Health, ComfortCare Hospice, SCRMC Rehabilitation and Wellness Complex, the Children’s Academy, and South Central Extended Care express their appreciation and thanks to the many dedicated volunteers who have donated more than 9,500 hours of volunteer service during the past year to assist our patients, visitors, and staff.
