Robert Urich to Headline 2001 Women's Life Conference

Emmy award-winning actor and cancer survivor Robert Urich will be the keynote speaker for South Central's 2001 Women's Life Conference to be held Saturday, April 28, at the M.P. Bush Fine Arts Building at Jones Junior College. Urich is the 1998 National Spokesperson for the American Cancer Society and is working as an advocate for cancer patients.

A native of Toronto, Ohio, Urich earned his bachelor of arts degree in radio and television communications at Florida State University and his master of arts degree in broadcast research and management from Michigan State University.

Urich made his stage debut by talking his way into a community theater production. He caught the attention of a talent agent and moved to Los Angeles to pursue a professional acting career.

He made his feature film debut in Clint Eastwood's second Dirty Harry movie, Magnum Force. He has worked extensively in many mini-series and movies for television, having received both critical and popular acclaim for his work in the Emmy award-winning Lonesome Dove.

In 1996, he went public with his diagnosis of synovial sarcoma, a rare form of soft tissue cancer. After successfully battling cancer for a year and remaining cancer-free, he has been given numerous courage and cancer awards.

Over the last 10 years, the Women's Life Conference has become a much anticipated event in South Central Mississippi, featuring high-profile professionals in the field of health and wellness. The conference is a one-day event designed to educate participants on various health issues.

Karen Vanderslice, Coordinator of community education at South Central, says, "The majority of health care decisions today are made by women. The Women's Life Conference provides a day of health and wellness information that allows women to make informed health care decisions. With the help of our corporate sponsors, we are able to provide a quality program for women of all ages."

The cost of the conference is $20 and preregistration is required. Registration packets will be available March 15. To receive a conference registration packet, call South Central's Women's Life Center at 399-0506.
