New Mother and Baby Care: The Women’s Place at South Central

“Really homey and cozy. Relaxing. So nice.”

Misty Moore’s comments on The Women’s Place are indicative of how women feel about their stay in South Central Regional Medical Center’s OB/GYN facility, The Women’s Place.

The nurses at The Women’s Place also received praise from Misty. “I’m particularly grateful to Carrie Leggett. She was wonderful. She was so helpful during the contractions and delivery,” Misty said.

From the moment she first walked into The Women’s Place, Misty was impressed.

“The Women’s Place is one of the finest in the state,” according to Vicki Walters, South Central’s Director of Maternal/Child Services. “A great deal of time and effort went into the development of the design and the choice of the furnishings.”

“We not only received input from our nursing staff and our OB/GYN physicians, but we also received input from women in our community about what they wanted to see in the facility.”

The result is a center that features:

  • 19 beds on the postpartum/post gynecological surgery unit
  • labor and delivery unit with five labor, delivery, and recovery rooms (LDRs)—six labor rooms and three surgical delivery room
  • surgical area that has two delivery rooms and a c-section room
  • state-of-the-art infant monitoring system in all of the patient rooms and at the nurses’ station
  • 32-bed nursery: The well-baby and transitional areas accommodate 12 infants each and the intensive care nursery accommodates eight infants
  • women’s health physical therapy program, which facilitates wellness and healing. The program offers outpatient services to women with urinary incontinence problems.

“Our staff has always provided excellent care for our new moms and for women who have gynecological surgery,” Walters says. “Combined, our nurses have more than 600 years of experience in the field of women’s services.”

Another aspect of The Women’s Place that Misty loves: The father can stay as long he wants and can be involved in every aspect of labor, delivery, and recovery.

Misty says that after Brooke was born, the excellent care continued.

“You watch the video that shows you how to bathe, feed, and burp the baby. They teach you infant CPR, breast-feeding, and exercises that get you back in shape. After you leave, you can call and they’ll answer all your questions.”

Many women such as Misty deliver all their children at The Women’s Place. And now a second generation of families is born there. Our seasoned staff has shared these special times with several generations of women.
