Guidelines for Breast Cancer Detection and Prevention

Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in women. The American Cancer Society recommends the following guidelines for detection of breast cancer:

Mammography: Women aged 40 and older should have a mammogram yearly.

Clinical breast exam: Beginning in their 20s, women should have a clinical breast exam done by their physician at least every three years.

Self breast exams: Self breast exams should begin at age 20. Women should report any changes in how their breasts look or feel to their physician right away.

Although it is a devastating disease, early detection and treatment is the key to overcoming breast cancer.
