Endoscopy:
The Endoscopy Lab at South Central Regional Medical Center has provided advanced endoscopy technology to the residents of South Central Mississippi since 1983. More than 5,000 endoscopy procedures are performed annually in the five-suite lab which is operated by gastroenterologists and licensed nursing personnel who have received specialized training in endoscopy services.
According to registered nurse Wanda Norton, Coordinator of the Endoscopy Lab at South Central, since 1993 the medical center has invested a great deal of funds to ensure that the endoscopy lab is equipped with the most up-to-date technology available. "Our nursing staff attends continuing education programs to expand their knowledge and expertise in the area of endoscopy nursing," Norton added.
The most common procedures performed in the lab include colonoscopy, EGD
(espohagogastroduodenscopy) and sigmoidoscopy. Other procedures performed in the endoscopy lab include bronchoscopy and ERCP (endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatogaphy).
Dr. Stephen Johnson, a gastroenterologist at South Central, said one of the reasons he decided to relocate to Laurel was because of the progressive nature of the hospital. Johnson came to South Central from a large university medical center located in Stratford, New Jersey. "The endoscopy lab is a state-of-the-art facility operated by well trained personnel. I have practiced here since 1992, and I have been extremely pleased with South Central's commitment to remain on the cutting edge of medical technology."
Johnson added, "It is important to have a full range of medical support services available in the event of an emergency. South Central's endoscopy lab can access anesthesia, laboratory, radiology, and surgical services 24 hours a day."
Gastroenterologists Carolyn Cegielski, DO; Stephen Johnson DO; and Jesse Ezzell, MD; of Jefferson Medical Associates in Laurel, all perform procedures in South Central's endoscopy lab.

Sleep Disorders Laboratory:
Are you, or a friend or family member experiencing:
Sleepiness Fatigue, or Lack of Energy!!!
All of these symptoms are due to the poor quality of sleep that occurs with untreated obstructive sleep apnea. The inability to breathe properly leads to continuous wake-ups and, consequently, poor sleep.
Although wake-ups may occur hundreds of times a night, most patients only remember two to four of them. This is because most of these wake-ups are for only 10 to 20 seconds. Even though these arousals are brief, they break sleep into very short episodes, which prohibits getting into a deep or rapid-eye-movement (dream) sleep. Even when allowed to sleep for 10 or more hours, if a person's sleep is broken up like this, that person may never feel able to receive a good night's sleep.
Sleepiness is a serious symptom- it is a contributor to a significant number of automobile deaths as well as other major catastrophes each year in this country. People should take fatigue seriously and understand that it can cause serious injuries; they should not drive or perform tasks that require close attention when they are sleepy. It is helpful to work closely with physicians to optimize your alertness.
Other symptoms relate to not receiving proper sleep. When people do not breathe properly, their oxygen levels drop and carbon dioxide levels build up through the night. This causes: feeling clumsy or uncoordinated having poor concentration or difficulty following instructions feeling depressed, blue, on edge or irritable having morning headaches having a lower sexual drive, having impotence, or not being able to function well sexually.
Often, bed-partners of patients with this condition complain about not sleeping well because of hearing loud snoring or worrying about the patient's pauses in breathing.
