The ambulance functioned primarily as rapid transportation to the hospital when an emergency occurred.
As the needs of the community increased, the hospital's emergency vehicles grew in number to include a fleet of twelve emergency rescue and transportation vehicles. Technology made it possible to expand the capabilities of the equipment on board, and through increased educational opportunities, the emergency personnel were able to provide more advanced life-saving techniques and procedures.
The ever-widening and highly-trained team of physicians, nurses, paramedics, and technicians eventually developed into South Central Emergency Medical Services District, and then EMServ. EMServ responds to over 5,000 emergency calls every year performing life-saving procedures with the latest equipment-on the emergency scene, in the ambulance, and into the emergency room at South Central Regional Medical Center.
The staff of EMServ continues to move forward into areas of education, providing programs in CPR, first aid, and safety as well as blood pressure screenings to civic, schools, church, professional, industrial, and municipal groups as well as individuals. EMServ instructors provide field clinical training for paramedics and emergency medical technicians from Jones Junior College and the University of Mississippi Medical Center. EMServ instructors also train local volunteer fire and rescue departments in basic emergency response techniques in order to improve community safety. In each new endeavor, EMServ represents the excellence in emergency response the community has grown to expect.
